British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
