An Prediction Market Trader Profited $436,000 from Bets Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.
Market Movement in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.
One account, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had increased to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in positions right before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.
Market Background
Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
